I like how we are working in groups but also given the chance to think for ourselves. When we come into our groups we put all of our individual ideas together to make an even better idea. It helps to validate each other.

Day 7

Student Contributions by Eleanor

What We Did In Class

We first went to ‘Strayer 1200 Defining an Era’ and were told to read the passages and write down all the key characteristics that we believe define the era of the 1200’s. This could be new civilizations, the diffusion of religions, or new trade patterns. After we spent that time independently, we had to discuss with our group about our ideas and listen to the other group members ideas as well. As a group we had to make a paragraph to describe the 1200’s using all of the ideas we came up with. The paragraph is supposed to not be too vague with its descriptions and have examples that are relevant. Then once the whole class finished their paragraphs, we rotated tables and were told to evaluate that tables paragraph.

I feel as if I have grown as a learner in being more independent. I’ve been able to realize that thinking for myself and forming my own opinions are okay. And as a learner I believe it is very important to have your own opinions on different topics. I also think I have grown as a learner by being interested in the things that I’m actually learning, because then it is easier for me to understand the topics and therefore I can expand on my thoughts and opinions.

I really like how we are working in groups but also given the chance to think for ourselves. Because once we come into our groups we can put all of our individual ideas together to make an even better idea. It really helps to validate other people’s opinions so that they want to continue to think more for themselves.

My Thoughts

Well, today was one of the first days I didn’t stick to my values on how people learn best. I planned everything from bell-to-bell.  They still did all of the work and I absolutely love that Eleanor sees that she is being prompted to think for herself.  However, I wish I could allow for more time for them to explore what they are interested in.  I’m getting there.

One of her comments left me a little unsettled.

I feel like listening in class will help me prepare for the exam, as well as making sure I understand the topics that we will start to touch base with in class. Homework is also a key component that helps when studying for the AP Exam.

They have been programed to be believe that listening will prepare them for their future. And unfortunately, I do give homework that covers all of the concepts they need to know.  I wish I didn’t have to.  More, I wish I didn’t choose to.  I’ve minimized it as much as I can, but it is still there.
